What can a workout partner add to your fitness plan? The secret to any successful exercise routine is patience. It takes consistent action over time to see the desired results. The key word here is “consistent.” Without consistency, it doesn’t matter how hard or how long your workout routine is.

So, until you make regular workouts a habit, which for some people can take months or even years, every workout can be a struggle. It’s important to eliminate as many barriers to entry as possible. To give yourself the best chance of sticking to your workout routine, one of the best ways is to find a workout partner who can go through your workout right along with you. That doesn’t mean you both have to do the same exercises. It just means that you’re there with each other for support and encouragement.

Having a workout partner provides a sense of responsibility to someone other than yourself and makes you accountable. It can sometimes be too easy to talk yourself into skipping a workout. But when you have a workout partner and are accountable to him or her, it’s a little tougher to shirk your responsibility. Your workout partner can help keep you on track toward your goals by ensuring that you actually show up. Suddenly, being too tired or too busy doesn’t seem like such a good excuse. You’re less likely to back out when someone is waiting on you.

Your workout partner may also be your number one fan and can be the person who most motivates you to continue your routine. They might be the one who pushes you to get out of bed on a rainy morning to go for a jog – the one who inspires you to push harder.

It’s a win-win for you both.

How To Find a Workout Partner

You have to ask around, and sometimes, it’s a process. First, ask your close friends, then your wider acquaintances. If that fails, try searching online for workout groups. Try meetup.com or Facebook to find groups local to your area. Post that you’re looking for a workout partner (be sure to outline what kind of exercise you like to do), and you’re sure to find someone willing to take the plunge. Another good bet is finding a sport-specific club or group to workout with, for example a runner’s group or a cycling club.

As we said at the top of this post, consistency is key to results. If you find yourself losing interest or enthusiasm for your regular workout routine, then that consistency will be in jeopardy. To avoid losing interest altogether and creating gaps in your workout schedule, find a workout partner to bolster your commitment and make working out less chore-like and more sociable.
