CrossFit workouts have blazed a trail in the fitness world to become one of the latest hot trends, even though it's actually been around for over 15 years. Everyone from your business colleagues to the neighbor next door seem to be raving about how they get a “total workout" with CrossFit. No matter where you are, you probably know someone who has at least given it a try. But what exactly is CrossFit? What has made it all the rage?

CrossFit is truly a landmark program in more ways than one. First, it’s a millennial program, created in 2000 by Greg Gassman. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program focusing on aerobic exercise, body weight exercises, and Olympic weightlifting. CrossFit is popular because it uses unconventional exercises and many tools, such as barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, jump ropes, plyo boxes, resistance bands, rowers, and mats, to spice up your fitness routine. It’s a total body workout, a one-stop shop for all your fitness needs.

Do CrossFit Workouts Really Work?

Seemingly, every few months there’s a new "must try" workout craze or fitness regime but, as we all know, exercise fads come and go. What makes CrossFit different? Is it worth forking out what can be a hefty membership fee to try it? Does it really get results claimed?

We have no agenda here at RX Fitness, but the short answer is, "Yes." CrossFit is a program designed to optimize physical competence across 10 recognized fitness domains; stamina, strength, speed, flexibility, power, etc. That’s why CrossFit’s general methodology is employed by thousands of police academies, tactical operations teams, military special operations units, and gyms worldwide. It’s even the official training program of the Miami Marlins.

Who Can Do CrossFit?

CrossFit is designed for general health and fitness, regardless of age, sex, or any other personal factors. So, in reality, anyone can do CrossFit. In your local CrossFit program, you’re likely to find a mix of people, including college students, elite athletes, retired folks, adult professionals, and many others. You’ll find classes are mixed by height, weight, age, and every other measurable attribute.

Common CrossFit Techniques

CrossFit workouts incorporate many different techniques from a variety of disciplines. This makes it both interesting and effective. CrossFit programs take place at gyms across the country. Classes are typically 1.5 to 3 hours long, depending on level and intensity. CrossFit constantly changes workouts so that the body is forced to re-adapt, making it stronger much faster and eliminating the likelihood of plateaus. It also incorporates HIIT (high interval intensity training) in its workout routines. Running sprints up and down a court at the highest speed possible for 1 minute is a HIIT exercise, for example.

More exciting are the many tools, gadgets, and common items incorporated into CrossFit workouts. You'll find everything from traditional dumbbells, barbells, and kettle bells to complex bar structures, ropes, large and small, chains, tires, and more. With many exercises, your own body weight provides the resistance. Just don’t expect to find any exercise machines! Instead, you’ll be doing stuff like jumping on boxes, deadlifting, squatting, lifting tires, climbing ropes, and more. It is a totally unique experience.

Is It Time to Give CrossFit a Shot?

How do you know if CrossFit is right for you? There’s no way to know until you try it. Run a Google search for CrossFit gyms or classes in your area and give them a call. Many will offer a free trial class so you can dip your toe in the water and see if you like it without coughing up any money.
